Positivity abounds when you take the time to spread the word about a product you love or meet with a friend in person. Online social networking is great but a drawback is the loss of human contact. I do not get the same release of feel good chemicals (endorphins, oxytocin) flowing through my body when I post or tweet about something as I do when I hear a person’s voice on the phone, see the expressions on a person’s face or respond to human touch. The intimacy (the thrill) is gone? I do not propose to eliminate ‘social networking’. It is a great tool. But, I believe positivity abounds when you find the right balance of in person networking and online networking.
The last few weeks have been pretty good for me. But the key is taking the extra step and reaching out in real time. Without human contact, I feel like a prisoner of my own thoughts. I am frantically dancing in my own ideas and blind to what is happening right before my eyes. When my mind starts screaming get me out of this tornado of thoughts, I know it is time to get outside or pick up the phone.
I missed my dear friend Sandra Ole’s calls a few times this past weekend. She left beautiful messages wishing me well on a new path I am taking in life. I felt so good to hear those messages. After playing a bit of phone tag, I decided to email her my thoughts and feelings at that moment. Touched by my email, she called me and we connected. The sound of her voice changed the energy in my body. My internal must-do now all at once list stopped. I heard her voice, listened and thought wow it is great to chat on the phone with a friend and hear the energy in her voice as her company Oliver Green continues to grow. http://olivergreenonline.com/
Then I looked at Facebook, my friend Mara Carrizo Scalize, had just posted that she discovered Rosie Hungtinton-Whiteley was wearing one of designs … dew necklace. Each time I see Mara, I love to her welcoming smile, feel her warm embrace, and how she truly listens to my words. What I love most is how she recognizes those moments when a text or an email will not do and she picks up the phone and calls me. http://www.mcsjewelryny.com
This month my friend Arlene Angard’s Interior Design Store made the ASID magazine cover. Arlene is passionate about creating an eclectic style of design sustainably. She finds a way to create the perfect look for each of her clients using local resources whenever possible. I continued the positivity with a congratulatory post on Facebook. It felt so good to hear her voice when she picked up the phone to call me when she saw the post. http://www.arleneangard.com/
After leaving yoga each Saturday, I feel grounded for the day and full of positive energy. My instructor, Robin Laufer, makes the practice fun. Her smile, laugh and anecdotal stories make each of us feel a part of the group. She reassures us that practicing yoga is not about being perfect. It is about being who we are in the moment and accepting ourselves. http://www.newagepointofinfinity.com/yoga.htm
Sometimes posting on Facebook is a way to share positive energy. I like fan pages. For example I really enjoy Susan Weiss Berry’s Evolved Eating fan page. Her posts about the importance of self-care have helped me so much in the last few weeks. I truly believe that finding a balance between online networking and in person networking is a part of self care. http://www.evolvedeating.com/
