T'is not easy being elegantly green.

Holiday, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is day on which one is exempt from work. It is time to capture the magic of the season, sparkling white lights against moonlit skies, the smell of cinnamon and nutmeg, the sound of laughter among friends, the taste of warm cocoa and stolen kisses under mistletoe … and yes giving. Not just gift giving, but true giving that comes from the heart.

Spending hours in crowded shopping malls and waiting on long lines does not capture the magic of the season. It does not feel like a joyous way to spend time away from work. I would rather be home baking cookies, listening to music and visiting friends.

Yes, I intend to give gifts to loved ones this season, but I choose to give thought to each gift I give. I cannot do that in a crowded mall where finding a gift feels like running a marathon.

So here are a few places I recommend to have good times and capture the magic of the season while finding your perfect gift.

FLEA 158B Rowayton Avenue Rowayton, Connecticut 06853. The color blue that accents their store is as calming as the sea. They believe that convention is boring and it is fun to spend the day shopping among good friends, family and good food.

TREASURE & BOND 350 West Broadway New York, New York 10013. This non-profit Nordstrom donates 100% of its proceeds to charities benefiting children in NYC. So give the gift that gives back.

PACHUTE 1582 First Avenue New York, New York 10028. This eco-chic boutique on the Upper East Side has truly unique finds. Many of the designs are made by artisans and entrepreneurs.

And for those who really just want to stay home and be cozy, home made gifts are the best. They truly come from the heart.

So this holiday season, eat, drink, be merry and love!

Madonna said it so well … if we took a holiday a time to celebrate.
